I don't often get hostile calls but when I got the message from Jo that a slightly irrate man had been on the phone I thought I would call him back and find out more.
I am going to call him Jack, although that's not his real name.
So, I called Jack and listened to what he had to say- it was fascinating. For the last five years Jack had been looking for a solution to his anger management problems.
He read out from his bookcase the books and e-books he had read, I admitted that he had read more of them than I had.
He explained that reading about my anger management courses had maddened him. He explained that if he couldn't find a solution after five years of reading books and listening to CD's how dare I advertise to be able to help in one day.
My Reply
I had to admit that although I believe in the material I have developed it wasn't so good that it could drive around to his house and make him less angry. I explained I was not selling a magic pill but a system that could be implemented over a couple of months. I expalined that he would get a pre-assessment, the one day course and a follow up coaching call.
I also explained that I only work with people who want to change.
I then went on to say that if it didn't work he could have his money back.
The phone went silent.
